Live and work in Spain together with your European family member
If your partner, father or mother is a citizen of the European Union (for example, French, Italian, Romanian, German...) and is going to live with you in Spain, this is the document you need. The famous EU Family Member Card (Tarjeta Comunitaria) is what allows you to live and work in Spain with the same rights as any other European citizen.
With the new Regulation (May 2025), this procedure is exclusively for family members of EU/EEA or Swiss citizens who are not Spanish.

Who can apply for it?
If you come to Spain to reunite with a European family member, you can apply for it if you are:
Spouse or Partner
Married, registered in Europe, or stable pair (1 year cohabitation or children).
Children
Under 21 years old (own or partner's). Older if financially dependent.
Parents
Your parents or parents-in-law, provided they live at your expense.
Extended family
Special cases due to serious health reasons or previous cohabitation.
The key requirement: Financial means
Your European family member must prove that they "can take care" of the family in Spain:
If they work
Either as an employee with a contract or as a registered self-employed person (autónomo).
If they don't work
Proving sufficient savings and private health insurance (or public if applicable).
If they study
Be enrolled in an official center, have resources and health insurance.

The process: Step by step
3 months to apply
You have 3 months since you enter Spain to request the card at Immigration.
You are already legal
When you present the papers they give you a receipt that already allows you to be legal.
Up to 3 months
They have up to 3 months to give you the final answer.
5 years validity
Your first card is valid for 5 years. Then you ask for the permanent one.
